Sunset Boat Tour in Biscayne Bay with Local Historian

Join us for a tour of Biscayne Bay – heading out to the Key Biscayne Lighthouse before heading to the Miami River. This trip is also a great opportunity for photography so be sure to bring a camera.

The tour will focus on:

-The Indigenous and colonial histories of Miami

-The ecology of Biscayne Bay

-The impacts of colonization and development on the region’s people and ecosystems

Our guide Jessie Schneider is a PhD student with the University of Miami’s Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy, where he studies the history of South Florida’s diverse environments and its people’s relationships with them. His research has previously been published in the journals Marine Biology and Latin American Antiquity, and his current work focuses on sea turtles and Florida panthers. Before coming to Miami, Jesse attended Penn State and the University of Exeter where he studied history and ecology. He has fond memories of field research in England, Cyprus, Kenya, and now Florida. Jesse is fascinated by the ways in which a region’s history and archaeology can help to inform modern environmental challenges.

Give Miami Day

Our community events include boat tours of Biscayne Bay, film screenings, a lecture series called Fish Talk and a monthly beach cleanup called Trashy Tuesday. We’ve recently started a program in collaboration with Slow Food Miami to connect local chefs to local seafood producers.

Our web series Eating Out: The Hunt for Sustainable Seafood highlights fisherwomen, scientists, local environmental advocates, and fish farmers as we explore complex fisheries issues.

Follow us online, sign up for our newsletter on our website, and come get fishy with us at an event.
